Elaine Upton was born in Western Australia and raised on a wheat / sheep farm located north-east of Perth. Educated via correspondence, she was an only child and spent much of her time drawing. Her passion for drawing led to her enrolment in a Commercial Art course at Perth’s Technical College under the mentorship of watercolorist Ivor Hunt.
In 1990’s she began making regular trips to Broome and in 1994 she set off on a solo journey from Perth to Broome and onto Northern Arnhem Land. Being raised within the country, she had already developed an innate passion for painting birds and nature, but the influences of the desert environment with its unsurpassed beauty led to an emphatic influence in Outback Landscape depictions.
